By now most would have heard about the Galaxy Note 7 disease of explosion. And the fact that it’s been and continues to be banned on airlines, and other public places. Samsung had to intervene by making a global recall and subsequently stopped producing the Galaxy Note 7. All this were too late to prevent the wound that this situation has brought to the company’s mobile division.
Aside the harm done to the company’s reputation, which is likely to remain in consumers mind for a far long time, the company has lost nearly as much as $5 billion since this drama started. And that’s not the bigger problem.
The greater menace has to do with the way consumers now think about the Galaxy Note 7. The first thing that comes to mind when one hears “Note 7” is explosion. Many people now see it to be a “gold” packed with explosives that can strike at any time.
The company is putting much into convincing customers that other Samsung aside the Note 7 have not trust issues and are safe to use. Even with that, rumour has it that the company may abandon the note brand all together, at least to save it’s name.
A recent report from The Korea Herald, says Samsung is now contemplating a fundamental shift to a smartphone strategy that has served the company well for years. Specifically, Samsung, going forward, may focus on releasing just one premium smartphone model per year as part of a concerted effort to focus on quality. The end result would be Samsung releasing a Galaxy S8 this year and forgoing the release of the next generational Galaxy Note 8.
As for Samsung doubling down on quality, it’s worth noting that Samsung rushed the Note 7 to market in an effort to steal all the airwaves that the iPhone 7 may have. In their haste, however, Samsung released a faulty and dangerous device to the market. All the more worrisome is that Samsung still isn’t quite sure why its initially well-reviewed Note 7 is prone to exploding.
Samsung hasn’t yet made any formal announcement on what it plans doing with the Galaxy Note family but I know the smartphone make is investing much resources into making a product that wouldn’t cause customers to panic.
