A report by the regulatory National Communications Authority says that MTN and Tigo lead in new mobile and data subscriptions in Ghana, the three other telecom providers follow. The two companies made impressive gains in mobile and data subscriptions in the country against their competitors including Airtel, Vodafone, Expresso and Glo who on the other hand experienced net loses in subscribers.
The report revealed that by July ending 2016, MTN alone had 9,369,407 mobile data subscribers throughout the country. The coompany maintained it’s position as the leading telecom company in the country having been controlling 50% of the total subscriber base.
Vodafone Ghana was listed as the second company with highest mobile and data subscriptions. By the end of the second-quarter 2016, the company had 3,271,790 subscribers representing 17.4% of total mobile data subscriptions in the country.
The mobile data network on the third position is Airtel. By the ending of July 2016, there were about 3,058,545 people who are using Airtel in Ghana. They all make up Airtel’s 16.3% market share of the mobile and data in Ghana.
To my surprise, Tigo placed fourth on the table. Tigo as at that time had just 2,716,023 subscriptions amounting to 14.5% of the total subscriber base. Glo and Expresso maintained their fourth and fifth positions on the table. Glo had 298,622 which represents 1.6 % of the total mobile subscribers in the country. Expresso on the other hand managed to maintain 41,541 subscribers amounting to 0.2% of the subscriber in Ghana.
In terms of mobile data traffic, the National Communication Authority said something we all expected, that the mobile data usage has been increasing progressively since the third quarter of 2015 and has been consistent with increase in mobile data subscriptions. The volume of data usage it says in the country increased by 19.5% by the second quarter of 2016 from 12.8 million GB to 15.3 million GB.
In mobile data usage by telecom provider, MTN Ghana, who already control 50% of the market accounted for 41.4% of the mobile data usage with 6.33 million gigabytes (GB). Then comes Vodafone with 3.99 million GB which is 26.1% of total usage. Airtel followed with a market share of 23.1% and data volume of 3.53 million GB. Tigo and Glo followed in third and fourth in mobile data usage with 8.8% and 0.6% of total volume of data consumption equalling with data volumes of 1.31 million gigabytes and 89 thousand gigabytes.
