Apple replaces the headphone jack it’s new iPhone models with what it calls the Airpods, a wireless ear buds which the smartphone maker says is more efficient power efficient than other Bluetooth devices. It was unveiled as part of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, all of which do not have a headphone jack.
The AirPods is like your normal Bluetooth headset but smaller and more power efficient, Apple says. The W1 processor it makes use of makes it even more powerful.
To avoid jargon overdosing you, the W1 processor is simply the processor that powers the AirPods, since it made to be smart too. The chip works with other sensors in the device to manage the earbud’s connections and functions. Like intelligently detecting and switching to a new device ; like from an iPhone to iPad, or Apple Watch and automatically turns on its microphone when you get a call.
That’s not all, the AirPods can detect when it’s in your ears and therefor play music when it needs to.
You access Siri with a double tap to the AirPods and select and control your music, adjust volumes and check your battery life with voice commands. “An additional accelerometer in each AirPod sdetects when you’re speaking, enabling a pair of beam-forming microphones to focus on the sound of your voice,” Apple adds, “filtering out external noise to make your voice sound clearer than ever before.”
Like other wireless earbud designs, AirPods come with a carrying case that doubles as a recharging station with a battery good for 24 hours of listening. The AirPods alone can work for up to five hours only. It’s built-in infrared sensors can detect when the device is your ear or not, making it able to switch the device on and off when needed. Thereby saving you some amount of battery life.
AirPods are charged in a charging case that also has its own battery that can last for 24 hours, which means you can charge your AirPods on the go, and when the battery case is depleted, you just plug it in via Lightning and charge everything simultaneously. Plus, charging should be super fast! Apple predicts that 15 minutes in the charging case will give you 3 hours of listening time.
The AirPods doesn’t only work with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Older iPhones running iOS 10 will pair with it to. According to Apple’s site, iPhone 5 and later models can upgrade to the new operating system. (AirPods will also work with Apple Watches running watchOS 3, and Macs running macOS Sierra.)
Other non-Apple devices may work with the AirPods. The AirPods uses a Bluetooth protocol and the and the AirPods should stream music from any Bluetooth-enabled phone. Except that you can’t access it’s special features, they are all reserved for Apple products.
And don’t expect it to pair automatically as it will with Apple products, don’t.
Very soon, you’ll see people wearing the same white ear buds but with no wires between them. For now, the AirPods costs $159, a price that’s not outrageous considering the fact that other wireless earphones cost much more than $159.
